Small studio, difficult problems

We build the software companies run on once the off-the-shelf stack has stopped fitting. Fewer engagements than an agency, taken further than a contractor would.

The studio

What we are

Wave Logic Studios is a small custom platform studio in Virginia Beach, Virginia. We build the software that companies run on when the off-the-shelf stack has stopped fitting — headless commerce, integration layers, custom content systems, and the configurators that make technical products purchasable.

Most of our work starts the same way. A company adopted a good tool, then another, then a third, and the seams between them quietly became the operational bottleneck. Nobody chose that architecture. It accumulated. Our job is to look at what actually happens day to day and replace the accumulation with one system that was designed on purpose.

We are deliberately small. The person who scopes your project is the person who architects it and writes a meaningful share of the code. That constraint means we take on fewer engagements, and it is also why the platforms we ship are still running years later.

Why the studio exists

In the founder's words

I started Wave Logic Studios because I kept meeting companies with the same problem and no good place to take it. They were not looking for a website. They needed someone to look at four systems that half-worked together and rebuild the part that mattered — and most agencies were selling pages while most dev shops wanted a specification that nobody in the building could write.

So the studio is built around the part that is actually hard: figuring out what to build. Discovery is a real engagement with real deliverables, and I do it personally, because the decisions made in that first phase determine whether the rest of the money is well spent.

How we think

Six positions we will not negotiate on

Every studio claims to be collaborative and detail-oriented. These are specific enough to be disagreed with.
01

The workarounds are the requirements

The spreadsheet somebody maintains by hand is the most honest specification document in any organization. We go looking for it in the first week, because it describes the process the software was supposed to support and did not.

02

Boring technology, on purpose

Next.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL. Nothing here is novel and that is the point. A platform is only an asset if a team you hire two years from now can read it, extend it, and deploy it without calling us.

03

Build less than you are asked to

The most valuable output of discovery is usually the list of things that turned out not to need building. We would rather ship a smaller system that gets used than a comprehensive one that gets worked around.

04

Design and engineering are one conversation

Interfaces get designed against real content and real data constraints, never placeholder text. The design system and the component library are the same artifact, so they cannot drift apart after launch.

05

Say no to the wrong project

If a configured off-the-shelf tool would serve you better than a custom build, we will tell you on the first call. It costs us the engagement and it is still the right answer.

06

Launch is the midpoint

A platform starts producing information the day real people use it. We stay on to read that information and keep building against it, rather than treating the handover as the finish line.

Work with us

We take on a small number of projects

If the problem is well suited to what we do, we will say so quickly. If it is not, we will point you somewhere better rather than take the engagement.
